Paris metro system –

Paris recently switched the metro ticketing system and does not use paper tickets anymore. Instead, you now have two ways to obtain a metro ticket:

  • Using your smartphone if it is NFC enabled
    • Install the “Ile de France mobilité” App

https://www.iledefrance-mobilites.fr/en/titres-et-tarifs/supports/telephone

  • Follow instructions to purchase tickets
  • Buying a “Navigo Easy” travel Pass:
    • Navigo Easy pass can be bought for 2 € on any ticket machine, at RER and metro stations, or from booth with station staff.
    • The pass then need to be loaded with the desire tickets

For both options:

  • You need one pass per person (it is not possible to validate 2 tickets on the same pass if you travel with someone)
  • Pass/Phone need to be validated when entering the metro/bus/tram by putting in contact with the NFC machines at the entrance. A pass not validated would result in a fine in case of control, even if it is loaded with tickets.
  • You can load:
    • Metro-Train-RER tickets
    • Bus-Tram tickets
    • One day unlimited pass
    • Paris-Airport tickets
    • Note that since the changes in the ticketing system, metro tickets are now also valid on the whole extended RER (rapid express train) and regional train at a single price of 2.50€.
    • A single ticket allows you to use several metro/train/RER lines or Bus/Tram lines in a row (but you have to validate it each time). However, any connections between metro/RER and bus/tram requires a new ticket as both systems are independants.

For navigating Paris metro system:

Metro is a great way to travel safely, efficiently and cheaply through Paris. Waiting time for a metro is usually no more than a few minutes. Several apps exist for navigating the system, both officials are the IDF mobilit and the RATP ones. Google map and City Mapper also work.
